Telaga Rowo in Wonogiri Regency, Central Java Province


If tourists come to Wonogiri Regency, they may find a unique vacation spot called Telaga Rowo. People also call it Rowo Lake, actually. As the name suggests, it is located in Rowo Village and belongs to Batuwarno Sub-District. Due to the popularity, many people are seen on the site either during regular days or holidays. In the past, the locals took advantage of the lake to store the rain and use the water for daily needs. Before the presence of the lake, in fact, the village is scarce in water! Thanks to the local government. They have built PDAM in order to supply water to the locals. That means the lake only has one function these days, which is as a vacation spot!

The Nuance
According to the locals, the lake has the size of about 1 hectare and it has been there for more than 100 years! The lake was formed naturally and it got the water from both a nearby fountain and the rain. In terms of nuance, the lake is surrounded by many plants and trees. The water looks calm, but tourists are not recommended to swim in it. Instead, they can rent a seahorse or duck boat and get around the lake with it. As for the facilities, the lake comes with a parking area, toilets, and even a fishing spot!

The first allure that tourists can enjoy in Telaga Rowo is none other than the scenery. It feels different than that of the city, for sure. No wonder, visitors often take advantage of the nuance to eradicate stresses. Plus, the air feels so refreshing there (especially in the morning). On the horizon, tourists can even see a big mountain! With all these benefits, the lake is suitable for a family recreation and relaxation.

The next allure in Telaga Rowo is related to the legend. It is said the lake was formed by the Walis during the dry season. The purpose is to help villagers so they won’t run out of the water. Another story is related to the sacredness. According to the locals, no one is allowed to wash baby clothes after the labor in that lake. Otherwise, the mother would get sick unexplainably.

Most visitors are those who live nearby. They are usually local families with kids. They may rent the water bike and enjoy some foods by the lake. Some people also come to Telaga Rowo for fishing, actually. In this case, everyone should carry his own fishing rod and other required equipment.

How to Get There
A trip to Wonogiri Regency may take around 3 hours and 28 minutes if tourists come from Semarang City. The distance is 169 km, after all. It can be done faster if tourists take Semarang – Solo Street. Once they arrive at Wonogiri, they only need to get to Rowo Village at Batuwarno Sub-District where the lake resides.
