Kebun Binatang Surabaya (KBS) or Surabaya Zoo is located in Setail Street no. I Surabaya. This zoo is famous in Surabaya to be one of recreational destination and proudly to be the largest zoo in Southeast Asia. The location of the zoo is quite renowned because it located in front of the “SUROBOYO” icon statue, which is the icon of Shark and Crocodile that symbolize Surabaya in particular. Moreover, the location is easy to reach and near to one of terminal in Surabaya.

There are over 351 species in this zoo, and there are over 2000 animals live in this zoo. Those are include Indonesia and the world’s endangered species of Mammals, Aves, Reptiles, and Pisces.
Every cage of the animals are grouped into categories. For example, poultry or birds (aves), where there are Australian pelicans, peacocks, Bali starlings, and ostrich. The beast that live in here are, Sumatran tigers, leopards, white tigers, lions, and bears.

On the back side of the zoo, there are primate animal cages include of orangutan, chimpanzee, baboon and bekantan. After that, you can see the giraffe barn, horses, deer, camels, hippos, and elderly bison American.

There is also a collection of rare protected animals such as Comodo is can be found at Surabaya Zoo. Other animals that may have also rare is like tapir, hog deer and Anoa. The zoo is also serves as a conservation for the animals.

Beside the land animals, you can also see the fresh water and sea water fishes that located in an Aquarium area. To be able to get into this area, you must buy a ticket for Rp 3,000, – per person. In this Aquarium there is also Arapaima gigas the largest freshwater fish in the world, which come from Amazone, South America. In this area there are also animal species of reptiles such as some types of crocodiles, snakes, iguanas and turtles.

Beside the animals, Surabaya zoo also has some other supporting facilities in the area of fun play or “Feeding Time”. The visitors can ride the animals like elephant, camel or horse and some attraction show with the animals on certain time. There is also the merchandise spot and photo corner for those who want to take a picture with the animals.

At early begin, Surabaya Zoo was first established by decree of Governor General of the Netherlands on August 31, 1916 No. 40, by the name of “Soerabaiasche Planten-en Dierentuin” (Botanical Gardens and Zoo Surabaya) for the services of a journalist named HFK Kommer who have a hobby of collecting animals.

Surabaya zoo is daily open at 08.00 AM – 17.00 PM, with entry fee for about Rp. 10.000 per person. This zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Asia. Surabaya Zoo first opened to the public in April 1918. Even in the 1970s, this zoo was to be the most complete collections in Southeast Asia. With an area of 15 hectares, this place also can be used as a place to walk and exercise.

Nowadays, Surabaya Zoo is having a role to be a place for family Education and Recreation place. By the facilities and infrastructure that owned by Surabaya Zoo, it becomes a living laboratory as well refreshing place. Surabaya Zoo is being prepared to be a place that provides facilities and infrastructure for all people in the world to conduct research on the flora and fauna that owned by Surabaya Zoo. In other hand, it is become a living laboratory for support of conservation activities undertaken by the Surabaya Zoo.
