Mas Village is one of the oldest villages in Ubud Subdistrict, Gianyar Regency, widely known as a village of art and culture, particularly as a world-renowned center for wood carving. The name “Mas” is believed to derive from an Old Balinese word meaning “gold,” symbolizing prosperity, nobility, and the high artistic value passed down through generations by its people.
Mas Village is also rich in traditional customs and spirituality. The village consists of 12 banjars, each with its own temple, traditions, and social and cultural activities that remain well-preserved. The community’s way of life harmoniously blends tradition, religion, and art.
Mas Village also has two governing structures, namely:
– The Traditional Village (Desa Adat), which oversees traditional affairs, customs, and religious ceremonies.
– The Administrative Village, which handles administrative governance in accordance with national regulations.
Visitors can view wood carvings at the Kp Rodja Wood Carving Gallery or the Njana Wood Carving Museum. In addition, visitors can watch the Kecak api dance, learn to play the Balinese gamelan, and learn mask dance to gain insight into Balinese culture.
