Mamose Ritual of Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province


Aside from visiting beautiful natural attractions and historical places, tourists can also watch interesting traditions when they visit Mamuju Regency in Indonesia. In fact, they can find many of them including the one called Mamose Ritual. It belongs to Budong-Budong people who live in Tabolang Village of Topoyo Sub-District. If tourists want to watch and find more information regarding the tradition, they can simply head to Central Mamuju regardless of where they come from. So, what is it exactly? Mamose has become the part of local culture and it functions both as an entertainment and a phase before doing something important. For tourists, it indeed becomes a unique ritual to watch when visiting the region!

The Nuance
For the information, Mamose Ritual is only done by people who live in Tabolang Village. Thus, tourists need only to visit the village if they want to watch it directly. Have no worries. The locals are friendly and they allow outsiders to spectate the ritual (as long as they do not disturb the procession). In terms of nuance, it varies depending on the phase. In the beginning, it looks merry due to the Parang attraction. This performance is done in a local house yard, actually. Next, a Pamose or the elderly read some messages in front of the audience using the local language. As for the attire, these people only wear their daily clothes!

More about Mamose Ritual
Mamose Ritual is considered the most famous traditional Ceremony in Mamuju Regency and West Sulawesi Province. The good thing is tourists are allowed to watch and participate as long as they don’t disturb the procession. As mentioned before, the event consists of several rituals. In the beginning, some people perform a unique Parang Dance in an open field located near to their house. Next, the elders read a beautiful poem with soothing music in the background.

For the information, the locals conduct Mamose Ritual thrice a year. The first session is done before entering the forest in order to cut some trees for the sake of agriculture. The second session is done after cutting those trees and the last session is done after the harvest season. There is also a procession called Magora, when the locals ride a boat and explore Budong-Budong River.

Even though Mamose Ritual is considered sacred, it also emits an entertaining ambiance to the audience especially tourists. The fact is participants don’t need to wear any special attire. No wonder, the ceremony looks casual but meaningful!

How to Get There
The first destination is none other than Mamuju City. For those coming from Jakarta City, they can take an airplane from Soekarno – Hatta International Airport and head to Tampa Padang Airport at Mamuju. The flight takes about 4 hours and 35 minutes, actually. Once arriving at the airport, the next destination is Tabolang Village at Tapoyo Sub-District. This trip may take around 2 hours and 16 minutes, as the distance is 101 km. As for the best route, tourists can take Poros Majene – Mamuju Street for the fastest route.
