Historic Cave of Kokas
Visiting Kokas City, Fakfak Regency, West Papua, is incomplete if you miss the opportunity to explore the remnants of World War II in this city. In the period 1942/1945, Kokas once held the title as the base city for the defense of the Japanese army against the allies.
As a base city for military defense, Kokas certainly kept various relics. One of them is the relic of the most historic is a Japanese cave or fort building located in the center of Kokas city. There is nothing special about this seaside cave building. From the outside, there were only three lookout bunkers measuring no more than 4 square meters. However, who would have thought, behind these bunkers was a 138 meter long hiding cave that was dredging the hill. As a location designed to be the center of military defense, this cave was built facing the sea. From this cave, every allied ship that docked in Kokas city would be easily monitored by the Japanese army.
Even though it functions as a tourist spot, what is unique is the visitors can still see the original natural shape of this cave. Nothing has changed, except for the third mouths gate at cave. Interested in exploring every corner of this cave? You need to prepare an equipment including; a lamp or flashlight before starting to walk. In the depths, this cave is completely dark. The sunlight is only able to guide to the lips of the cave.
However, this is where the sensation of walking along the cave. Curiosity will not be automatically answered when you enter the cave. In the dark, you still have to feel and look for 'surprises' in every corner of the cave that you pass. It feels too pity to miss every detail of the luxury of the passageway in the cave. You will find many rooms that partitioned to resemble bedrooms.
Satisfied with the walk, next you can enjoy the beautiful views of the sea and the headland in front of the cave. You can pinch the panorama that stretches from the top of a hill.
How to get there?
To visit this cave, transportation is available from Fakfak terminal to Kokas downtown. Throughout the 2 hour journey, you will be entertained by the cool air and panoramic views of the hills in the wilderness of Papua. By car, you will be escorted to the location of the cave.
