Mioswaar Island


Mioswaar Island, one of the islands in Cenderawasih Bay National Park, has a cave with hot springs containing sulfur which is interesting to visit. The existence of hot springs with the sulfur smell is closely related to volcanic phenomena. In fact, in Papua, never encountered the existence of a volcano. On the mainland of Papua Island, volcanoes are only found in Papua New Guinea, which is very far from Wondama Bay. So, the existence of this sulfur hot spring is very unique and magical.

Meanwhile, the presence of air bubbles on the beach, possibly the result of furnace due to very deep plate fracture under the sea. The bubbles escape through fractures or weak sediment layers. However, this natural phenomenon is only a theoretical analysis that requires study and laboratory testing. And, these phenomena are just a few of the many other phenomena that make geologists curious about this easternmost island of Indonesia.

Inside the cave on this island, there are skeletons from the ancestors of the Wandau ethnic group which is believed to be the first human group to inhabit this island. There are also more than 1,000 species of fish in this area, ranging from mangrove fish, reef fish, estuarine fish, and pelagic fish. Several types of reef fish include the Pomacantridae (Angelfish, Anemonefish, and Damselfish), Labridae (Wrasses), Balistidae (Tigerfihses), Scaridae (Parrotfish), Chaetodantidae (Butterflyfishes), Siganidae (Rabbitfishes), and Acanthuridae (Surgean fishses).

Other types of fish include fosal eagle rays (Aetobatus nannari), manta rays (Manta birostris), large cockatoo fish (Bolbomethopon muricatum), mackerel (Scomberomorus commersonnianus), kuwe (Carangidae), snapper (Lutjanidae), skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis). ), grouper or geropa (Serranidae), and cob (Euthynnus affinis).

Not only Mioswaar Island, there is also Yoop Island, Numfor Island, Nusrowi Island, and other islands that you should not miss to visit. Administratively, this tourist spot is located in two districts around Papua, namely Wondama and Nabire.
