Weyos Beach


Weyos Beach is located in the middle of Jeen Womom Coastal Park and is a sub-zone for ecotourism and public facilities, and included in the Abun District, Tambrauw Regency, West Papua Province. Weyos beach is a fairly wide bay and has a fairly good stretch of coral reefs. Weyos beach has always been a stopover place for people to go to Sausapor or Sorong because of its location protected from waves.

The sea in front of Weyos beach is rich in lobster shrimp, while the land area inhabited by many wild deer and wild boar which are often hunted. Weyos Beach is a part of the coral reef protection zone, while the land area is part of the coastal vegetation rehabilitation subzone. There are also deer and birds of paradise, and freshwater springs. In the past, this place was a shelter for the community from the waves on their way to Sausapor or Wau Village.

The opening ceremony of Sasi is a traditional event held on this beach. Sasi is the wisdom of indigenous peoples to protect nature, and to provide opportunities for animals and plants in an area to develop and restore their population. During Sasi, local people agree not to exploit marine products or forest products in the Sasi area. People in Sukwo, Womom, Warmandi, Waw and Weyav villages are prohibited from catching fish or turtles. This rule aims to protect the breeding of fish and turtles. Thanks to the Sasi tradition, the region's natural resources are under control even though they are protected by customary law. Weyos is a natural habitat for various tropical birds, deer, soa-soa, cuscus, and turtles.

What can visitors do besides enjoying the beauty of Weyos beach? Of course you can meet the popular Tambrauw turtle. Visitors can only see and take pictures. Not allowed to invite to play and bring it home. Visitors can also enjoy the morning and evening sun here. Meanwhile, if you want to snorkel or dive, it is better to bring equipment from home because there is no place to rent snorkeling and diving equipment here.

As a protected coastal area, visitors are expected to participate in maintaining the cleanliness of the beach by not littering. It is also hoped that it will not disturb the various endemic animals that exist in coastal and land areas.
