The Mount Ijen tourist area was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) in Paris, France, in 2023. Located in Banyuwangi and Bondowoso Regencies, East Java, the geological tourism park has become an Indonesian geopark admired by many international tourists.
Ijen Geopark passed the UNESCO Council meeting held in Satun Province, Thailand, on September 5, 2022, with the highest score among other geoparks. During the assessment process, Ijen Geopark received a score of 873. To date, this score remains the highest among aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks in Indonesia, including Belitung Geopark (850) and Maros Pangkep Geopark (869).
Ijen Geopark received the highest score among all other Geopark candidates in Indonesia due to its unique geology, biology, and culture, as well as its blue fire natural phenomenon. These unique qualities make Mount Ijen a unique attraction worldwide.
With UNESCO’s support, all of Mount Ijen’s natural wonders, cultural traditions, and biodiversity will be promoted by the organization. This will make the Ijen UGGp more well-known around the world.
Furthermore, a network of UGGps will create opportunities for people to work together in many areas, including education, economics, labor, culture, and more. This will happen both nationally and globally.
