Bukit Lawang And Tangkahan Eco Tourism Trip 6 Days/5 Nights

orangutanDay 1: Arrive at Kuala Namu airport. Welcome by our driver cum guide upon arrival then transfer to Medan. Medan is Indonesia’s third largest city which comprised of many different ethnic groups, contributing to a wide variety of mouth-watering foods. City tour Medan by visiting Maimoon Palace, the Great Mosque and the Vihara Gunung Timur temple.

Day 2: In the morning drive to Bukit Lawang in Gunung Leuser National park through plantation route. Upon arrival in Bukit Lawang visit the orangutan viewing platform. An orangutan rehabilitation centre was set up in 1973 to help orangutans released from captivity to learn the skills they will need in the wild. Once they are released into the wild, they are monitored and still provided with some supplementary food until they’re 100% ready to fend for themselves. At the moment Bukit Lawang is only a place for the observation of the Orangutans.

Day 3: After breakfast you start for jungle trekking for 6 hours incl. lunch. Gunung Leuser National Park is located nearby and a great place to do some wildlife trekking in this large jungle park. Approximate distance: 100 km Estimated travel time: 6 hours (including stops and lunch). During jungle trekking you will be accompanied by a professional local guide. In the afternoon return to Bukit Lawang for overnights stay.

Day 4: Traverse bumpy roads to reach the small jungle community of Tangkahan. This tiny, remote village was practically built on the logging trade in the 1980s and 1990s, because the people became aware of the damages by such activity. They collectively decided to stop illegal logging and transform the area into an functional, self-sustained ecotourism destination. In April 2001 the community banded together to form the Tangkahan Tourist Institute (Lembaga Pariwisata Tangkahan – LPT) and fixed regulations prohibiting the exploitation of the surrounding rainforest. The Conservation Response Unit (CRU) was born – a team of Sumatran Elephants and their mahout that helps safeguard the national park to protect it from encroachment. When its bath time at the Elephant camp on the outskirt of Gunung Leuser National Park tourists are allowed to help. By joining the elephants by their afternoon bathing you will support this local initiative.

Day 5: This morning we will head off to a nearby Elephant Rangers Station. There, Elephants are used to help Rangers monitor the nearby jungle and also offer Elephant treks. After helping the Rangers bathe the Elephants we will take a walk with them for around 1 hr. The Elephant ride activity will be end up in the front of your lodge. The rest is your own program. At noon you drive back to Medan, approximately 4 – 5 hrs away.

Day 6: In the morning is free program until we transfer you to the airport for catch your flight to next destination. End of your trip.
