Special Food Served on The Special Day of Eid

The moment of Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran is often filled with meals with family and relatives. During Eid, a variety of food and beverage dishes are served at the dining table. Several types of Eid specialties include chicken opor, beef stew, ketupat, rendang, liver-fried chili sauce, and nastar cake. Eid specialties are usually only served during Eid. Therefore, Eid specialties are always eagerly awaited at the moment.

Each region or family tradition has different Eid specialties. In Indonesia, the most common Lebaran food is ketupat or lontong. Ketupat or rice cake is a heavy food substitute for rice. There are several special Lebaran foods from Betawi, Sundanese, Javanese and others adapted to the traditions of their respective regions. As in urban areas, there are modern or contemporary Eid specialties, which currently popular.

The following are typical Eid foods that are often found in Indonesia:

Ketupat
This typical Eid food is certainly familiar for Indonesia society. Foods made from rice that put in young coconut leaves woven are much popular during Eid. But, some other regions are replaced with oval -shaped rice cake wrapped in banana leaves called lontong.

Opor Ayam or chicken braised in coconut milk
It feels incomplete if there is Ketupat but there is no Opor Ayam. Chicken opor is one of the choices of side dishes to accompany Ketupat on Lebaran dishes.

Potato Fried Sambal/Balado Potato
This typical Lebaran food is also liked by many people on Lebaran. Potato fried sauce or balado potato is a complementary side dish besides rendang and chicken opor.

Rendang
This Eid special dish is not to be missed. Generally, rendang is made with beef, coconut milk, and spices. However, rendang can also made of chicken, lungs, mushrooms, duck and even eggs.

The process of cooking rendang does take hours (usually about four hours) until all that’s left is chunks of jet black meat and bran. At room temperature, rendang can last for weeks. Rendang which is cooked in a shorter time and the coconut milk is not yet dry is called kalio, which color is light golden brown.

Rengginang
One of the typical Sundanese Eid foods is Rengginang. Rengginang is usually served at Eid moment, especially in villages in Java. Rengginang is a type of cracker made from glutinous rice which is sometimes mixed with shrimp paste.

Rengginang has a crunchy and savory taste, and suitable as a snack at any time. During Eid, rengginang is the main demand to accompany Eid specialties food, especially in the Sundanese or West Java people homes.

Pastry
A typical Eid snack when gathering with family is pastries. Pastries that are always present during Eid, are nastar, kastengel, Putri Salju, lidah kucing, and more.
