    Taman Budaya Yogyakarta Looking At The Art In Yogyakarta, Indonesia

    Between the crowded Beringharjo market and the busy traffic at Sriwedari street, a building stands and becomes the witness of Yogyakarta culture journey. Many artist from every region showed their amazing creations there. It is Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, the realization of a desire from General Director Ministry of Culture, Prof.DR.Ida Bagus Mantra who realized the importance of founding culture center and window of the riches of regional arts and culture at that time.

    At the beginning, Taman Budaya was located in Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta until 2005. Then, it moved to the area of Military Society Art Building. TBY becomes the window of Yogyakarta culture which develops, processes, records, and exhibits the products and the process of arts and culture and also becomes the information media of any kinds of arts and culture.

    Art performances in TBY are innumerable. The old colonial building now becomes neat and prestigious art area with architectural without any changing since 1792. In the past, colonial families stayed in this heritage building. It had also been a place to practice samurai sword in Japan era and a place to relax for Dutch colonial soldiers.

    At the south, a great concert hall of international standard stands. One thousand and two hundred audiences can sit in the second floor which is usually used as performance venue, while the first floor is used as an area to exhibit artist’s creations. Through TBY we can see and trace the growth and development of Yogyakarta’s culture.

    Obviously, Yogyakarta as one of the city of art and culture in Indonesia has "Taman Budaya" is proof that Yogyakarta friendly with arts and culture.
