Balai Pemuda Surabaya, or Surabaya Youngster Building, is one of Surabaya’s heritages building that keep on standing on the ground until present time.

This building was existing since 1907. Along the the journey of its time, this building had already running into some period of times. At the early begin, this building was such a entertainment hall for the Dutch elite society, called “De Simpangsche Societeit”. The Ducht used this building as dancing hall or party ball, and it last until 1945.

On 1945, this building was later occupied by Arek-arek Suroboyo incorporated in the Republic of Indonesia Youngter or Pemuda Republik Indonesia, which was the headquarters Surabaya’s youngters or Arek-arek Suroboyo. With a fierce resistance from the Dutch army, then Arek-arek Suroboyo was finally defeted and eventually the building was occupied by Dutch troops.

At the time when Indonesia was finally independent, Arek-arek Suroboyo came into the city and the building was occupied by the Military Authorities of East Java Province, and as executor Military Authorities were KMKB Surabaya.
Since that era, the function of Balai Pemuda was just about the importance of Surabaya’s youngster activities. Nowadays, at the north side of the building is given to the Art Council by Surabaya’s Mayor, as an Art Exhibition Center Surabaya. It includes coaching center for young artists who joined in Surabaya Youth Workshop and the Academy of Visual Arts Surabaya (Aksera).

Because the Balai Pemuda is one of revenue-producing offices, the the principal activities of the youth center building are by leasing the building to the community which have purposes, including to: Wedding Reception, Seminars, Exhibitions, Art Auditions, Music Exhibition or else.
