Among the most amazingly beautiful islands in the Derawan archipelago on the north easterly coast of East Kalimantan, - among which are the Derawan, Maratua, Sangalaki and Kakaban islands – Maratua Island is the most outlying of them all. Maratua is an atoll and faces the deep Sulawesi Sea that lies between Borneo and Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes), this is a channel of sea known as the Wallace Line that separates the Asian from the Australian continental shelves.
