Nias Island is an Indonesia’s diamond in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Once we get to this small island is very easy if you want to see the beach. Each coastal areas there is always the beach with a charming panorama. One of them is the area of Afulu, Nias Utara regency. Some of the beaches in Afulu is a fairly popular beach on Nias Island, not uncommon in certain months many foreign tourists who visit this beach, mostly tourists who come from Europe with a luxury yacht. One of the beaches is very charming in Afulu is Red Beach or known as Pantai Merah (Red Beach), Afulu or more native called Walo Beach.

The popularity of Walo Beach or Pantai Merah is not about of the waves that had dozens of meters high as well as on Sorake and Lagundri Beach in South Nias, because in this beach is absolutely no high waves for surfing activities. But what makes this Walo Beach sand is so popular is red sand beach. Charming red sand from a distance looks like a glimpse of the red clay. However, when touched, turns the sand is certainly not because of the color of red clay is very dense sand and grain are so smooth.

Walo Beach has 2.5 kilometers long beach lined with coconut palms. It is one of the more scenic beaches along the west coast. The most famous surf wave in Nias Utara is located near the south end of this beach, known simply as ‘Afulu’. Surfers visiting Nias Utara are coming for this wave. Walo Beach is the only beach in Nias Utara (in 2014) that has accommodation for foreign tourists, consisting of two very basic beach bungalows at the south end. The south end is relatively protected and is the best place for swimming. From here surfers swim a few hundred meters around the corner to the wave, or walk through the bush. The wave is a great lefthander but mainly for experienced surfers as it ends dangerously close to the reef.

Access: Walo Beach or Pantai Merah is easy to access. Start in Lahewa, the largest town in North Nias, and drive south towards Afulu. The drive is only 21 kilometers but may take up to up to 30 minutes due to the winding road. Walo Beach is just before Afulu village. It is possible to drive all the way onto the beach.
