Palembang is the second largest city in Sumatra after Medan and the seventh largest city in Indonesia. Formerly, Palembang was the capital for ancient kingdom of Srivijaya. The people believe that Palembang is the eldest city in Indonesia, based on the Kedukan Bukit inscription that was found in a west of Siguntang Hill city of Palembang, which states that the formation of a Wanua interpreted as the capital city of Srivijaya Kingdom on 16 June 682 AD. That is why, 16 June is nowadays become Palembang Birth date.

As one of the largest cities in Indonesia, Palembang can be very proud with the achievement that taken from the 1st ranked the cleanest metropolitan city in Indonesia 2007 and 2008 from Adipura Award and Asean Environment Sustainable City 2008 on the Asean cleanest city category.
