West Sumatra, Indonesia, a province which is known of its beautiful scenery and its delicious culinary. It is also known for its traditional dances, for the province has so many, such as Tari Indang (Indang Dance), Tari Pasambahan (Offering Dance), and Tari Payuang (Umbrella Dance). The most known, however, was Tari Piriang (Plate Dance).

The dance was originated from a town called Solok. It was called Tari Piriang or Plate Dance because the performers used plates in their dance. They held plates, one in each hand, which then the plates would be swung fast and rhythmically without the dancers lost their grips at the plates while clicking their ringed middle finger at the plates they hold, while a traditional music played with gandang (big drum), talempong (traditional gamelan percussion) and saluang (traditional flute) accompanied the dance.

The performers were two boys and four girls which wore modernized traditional bright attires. They dance for about 10 minutes, and when it reached the climax, all dancers smashed the plates they held to the ground and then they continued their dance on top of the shattered plates.

Tari Piriang was once used to be performed by young boys and girls to show their gratitude to their gods for the good harvest. The performers would dance energetically by holding plates in their hands. The movements were a combination of moves which they called tupai bagaluik (fighting squirrels), bagalombang(a surge of waves) and aka malilik (twisted roots) which were based on their traditionally martial arts calledsilek.
