Merauke is the first town in Indonesia Archipelago that catches the first rays of the rising tropical sun. Officially, Merauke as the capital city of Papua province, Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>Merauke as one\u00a0of the goals in Papua must be visited and enjoyed the beauty of nature. Found on February 12, 1902 by a Dutch citizen who tried to live among the indigenous population\u00a0of Marind Anim and Sohores. The name Merauke itself\u00a0is\u00a0said to originate from an anecdote among Dutch settlers and indigenous. At that time, the settlers asked\u00a0them for\u00a0the name of the area.\u00a0\u00a0Misunderstanding\u00a0the question, the locals\u00a0pointed to\u00a0the\u00a0Maro River \u2013the main river\u00a0that passes\u00a0the town\u00a0&#8211; and said \u201cMaro Ke\u201d meaning \u201cthat is\u00a0the River\u00a0Maro\u201d.\u00a0 Over\u00a0time, \u201cMaro Ke\u201d evolved\u00a0into Merauke and\u00a0became\u00a0established as the name of both the town and the regency.<\/p>\n<p>Covering\u00a0a\u00a0total area of 45,\u00a0071 square meters,\u00a0the\u00a0Merauke Regency is also known as one of the\u00a0largest\u00a0regencies in eastern Indonesia. It\u00a0borders\u00a0directly\u00a0the neighboring country of Papua New Guinea in the east, Boven Digul and Mappi Regencies in the North,\u00a0the\u00a0Asmat<u>\u00a0<\/u>Regency in the West, and the open\u00a0<strong>Arafura Sea<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0to its\u00a0south. The regency consists of 20 districts, with the district town of Merauke being the most populated.<\/p>\n<p>Merauke is also known as the staging point\u00a0for hikers\u00a0before venturing\u00a0into the pristinely enchanting Wasur National Park, which is roughly only about 60 km away. For travelers, Merauke offers\u00a0the most\u00a0facilities such\u00a0as\u00a0banks, internet cafes, airline agents, restaurants, markets, and accommodation. A walk around the town is easy and will reveal some incredible insight into the past. Old graveyards and lots of classic churches highlight the town, while cruising down the Maro River one can observe the daily life of Papuan fishermen. A trip to\u00a0the\u00a0local market will be an eye opener,\u00a0as you\u00a0encounter various uncommon items.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0How To Get There<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Garuda Indonesia,\u00a0\u00a0Lion Air<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Sriwijaya Air<\/strong>\u00a0serve daily flights to Merauke\u2019s Mopah Airport from<strong>\u00a0Jayapura<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Makassar<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Jakarta<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0Every two weeks Pelni\u2019s (Indonesia Sea Transportation Company) Tatamailau ship\u00a0sails from Merauke to<strong>\u00a0Agats<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sorong<\/strong>. The Kelimutu\u00a0ship\u00a0sails to Agats then\u00a0sails\u00a0through southern and Central Maluku, every four weeks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things To Do<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Within and around the town of Merauke, there are a number of interesting sites worth visiting. For a start, the\u00a0<strong>Sabang-Merauke Monument<\/strong>\u00a0can confirm that you have indeed reached the\u00a0east-most townIndonesia. As the name suggests, the monument is\u00a0one of a pair of monuments, where the first stands in\u00a0Sabang, Aceh Province, marking\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0west-most\u00a0\u00a0point of\u00a0the Republic of\u00a0Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>There is also the\u00a0<strong>Pepera Monument<\/strong>\u00a0which is the icon\u00a0symbolizing\u00a0the\u00a0reunification\u00a0of the Papua region\u00a0into the Republic of Indonesia through a UN supervised referendum in 1969 known as\u00a0<em>Penentuan Pendapat Rakyat (Pepera)<\/em>\u00a0or the \u201cAct of Free Choice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from\u00a0the\u00a0Wasur National Park, the natural beauty of Merauke can also\u00a0be found at the\u00a0<strong>Lampu Satu Beach<\/strong>. The beach is located only 4 km away from the center of Merauke and features\u00a0a picturesque lighthouse which\u00a0sheds\u00a0beautiful light\u00a0streaks from\u00a0sunset.
