Depart early from Reykjavík and get the crisp morning view of the glacier and the Ice Cave. First stop at the Langjökull Glacier, where the Ice Cave is situated. Langjökull is 953 sq/km, or the second largest glacier in Iceland. Discover that in Iceland, everything is possible – swiftly and suddenly you will find yourself standing on top of an Ice Cap, about to being your decent down below the surface and explore what lies beneath. In order to get there step on board a specially modified glacier vehicle. The Ice Tunnel or Ice Cave is a man made glacier cave that is situated high up in a remote area in the heart of Iceland. Your guide will explain how global warming has effected the surrounding area and the glacier. Once you are there, your expert guide will take you on a magical journey, deep within the glacier. See the stunning blue glacier ice and glacial formations. The glacier is in constant motion, and the guide has an interesting job. No day inside is ever the same – and you'll witness the movement of nature itself first hand. The temperature inside the glacier is usually around 0 degrees Celsius or 32 Fahrenheit. Until very recently what lies beneath the surface of Langjökull was a mystery. Sometimes bold ideas come to life, but the ice cave becoming reality was only possible with great effort and help from top engineers and renowned geo physicist. Afterwards jump on board and go into the warmth of the glacier vehicle. Eat lunch at the stunning Hotel Húsafell then go and explore the mightiest lava cave in Iceland, Víðgelmir. Víðgelmir is just shy of 1600 metres / 5250ft making it one of the largest largest lava caves in the world. Your guide will show you and explain to you the amazing features of the cave, amazing colors, lava and ice formations, lava stalactites and stalagmites. The lave field was formed during a destructive eruption in the 10th century, originating under Langjökull. During the eruption some of Iceland's natural pearls were created, such as Barnafossar and Hraunfossar. The cave is mentioned in a documentation dating back to 1398, and remains of a human presence dating back to the viking age (983-986) were discovered in 1993.
