Situated in the plain at the foot of the hill of Assisi, The basilica was constructed in the Mannerist style between 1569 and 1679 enclosing the 9th century little church, the Porziuncola, the most sacred place for the Franciscans. It was here that the young Francis of Assisi understood his vocation and renounced the world in order to live in poverty among the poor and thus started the Franciscan movement. You will spend in here around 30 minutes.
Church of Saint Damian // Back on the van and over to the top of the hill where you will visit this spectacular Church. According to tradition, it is connected with Saint Francis’ encounter with Christ. In 1205 he had been praying at Saint Damian which at the time was a very run down building. Saint Francis saw the figure of Christ crucified come alive and say to him, “Francis, don’t you see my house is crumbling apart? “ It was the first monastery of the Order of Saint Clare, where Saint Clare built her community. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The basilica, which was begun in 1228, is built into the side of a hill and comprises two churches known as the Upper Church and the Lower Church, and a crypt where the remains of the saint are interred.
