Peneleh is an area part of old Surabaya. It was originated from word "Pinilih" means chosen one, because the area was a territory of a choiced by a prince, son of Wisnu Wardhana who was a king of Singosari. Peneleh Graveyard (De Begraafplaats Peneleh Soerabaja) was a burial complex that built in 1814 during Dutch colonialism. It is older than Fort Canning Park (1926) in Singapore, Gore Hill Cemetery (1868) in Sidney, Mount Auburn Cemetery (1831) in Cambridge that is claimed as the first modern cemetery in the world, or Arlington National Cemetery (1864) in Washington DC.

Peneleh Graveyard was closed since 1955, but people are still allowed to visit their ancestors, or even taking pictures in the cemetery area. This is one potential spot for some photographers to taking a shoot. There are so many ancient ornaments among the tomb of the grave, which all in the form of gothic and Doric style. There is also roman sculpture, the angel statues and more.
