    Monas Jakarta

The National Monument of Indonesia usually called as Monas (Read: Monumen Nasional) is the icon of Jakarta. Located on the heart of Jakarta, in the center of Merdeka square. The height of the monument is 132 m (433 ft). It is symbolizing the struggle for Indonesian independence. The monument was constructed in 1961 under the direction of President Sukarno. In 1975 Monas was opened for the public as a tourism destination. Daily opens from. 08 am to 15 pm. Something special about the monument is that the top of the monument is covered with gold foil.

In the outer yard of Monas you can find the reliefs of Indonesian history begins from Singasari and Majapahit kingdom. The reliefs extend along the four walls showing the European colonialization in Indonesia. The history of Indonesia before independence such as Dutch and Japanese occupation are also described in the reliefs. If you reach the peak of the monument, you can find an amazing view of Jakarta city.
