Makora Island is part of North Sumatra province of Indonesia. The island is relatively small island on the north-coast of North Nias. This beautiful island is only 500 meters long and 350 meters wide. It is covered in coconut palms and there is a small beach on the south-east side of the island. The beach is 150 meters long and quite narrow. The width of the beach varies depending on the tide. There is good swimming in front of the beach as there are no currents or large waves here. On the western side of the beach there is a shallow area c. 30 meters out from the beach. The water here is usually clear with a beautiful turquoise colour. Snorkelling is best on the opposite (northern) side of the Island where there is a coral reef growing along the coast. Most of the island is covered by a coconut plantation. There are often plantation workers staying on the island and much of the interior is used as a kitchen garden where the workers grow fruits and vegetables. The undergrowth has been cleared and this island is very open compared to other islands in the area. In the past this island was a popular Sunday picnic spot for locals.
