    The Historical City

    Madiun regency, is the western town on East Java before entering Central Java.

    Madiun is surrounded by famous mountains like Wilis Mountain to the East, Kapur Selatan range to the south and Lawu mountain to the West.

    Madiun also noted as a significant city from the Indonesian History because there of the uprising of Communist Party of Indonesia [G 30 S PKI] which was had thousands of death.

    At early begin, Madiun was under the territory of Sultanate of Mataram. On Madiun history, noted that Madiun was a strategic area regarding its located was bordered with Kediri Kingdom [Daha].

    Madiun was a territory which was pioneered by Ki Panembahan Ronggo Jumeno or commonly called Ki Ageng Ronggo. The Etymology of Madiun was come from word “Medi” or Ghost and “Ayun-ayun” or swinging. Those referred to, when Ronggo Jumeno developed Madiun at early history there was many ghosts swinging around.

    Madiun regency was formerly a part of Madiun sultanate, which covers an area of Magetan, Ngawi, Ponorogo, and Pacitan. Culturally, Madiun is close to Central Java culture, which is Mataraman or Solo-Yogya. It is because Madiun was under the authority of the Sultanate of Mataram.

    Somethings to remember about Madiun are coming from their traditional food of Brem, which is kind of fermented of black sticky rice. Other Madiun traditional food is Pecel Madiun, it seems like Indonesian traditional salad consist of healthy vegetables, complete with coconut sauce dressing. Madiun is also the center of Pencak Silat, which is Indonesian martial art. The eldest organization of pencak silat in Madiun is Setia Hati, which is also the founder of early Pencak silat before there are many organizations with the same purpose nowadays.
