Obi Islands also known as Ombirah Island, Indonesian Kepulauan Obi. Obi Islands are group of the northern Moluccas, Maluku Utara (North Moluccas) province, Indonesia. They lies on the south of Halmahera Island, north of Seram Island, and east of the Sula Islands. The principal island of the group is Obi Island, 52 miles (84 km) long and 28 miles (47 km) wide, which contains the only major village, Laiwui, located on the northeastern coast opposite Bisa Island. Obi Island is mountainous, with a peak of 5,285 feet (1,611 metres) and a coastal plain around most of the island. Other major islands in the group are Bisa, Obilatu, and Tobalai. Claimed by the Dutch in 1682, the islands were occupied by the Japanese during World War II and became part of the Republic of Indonesia in 1949. They produce some sago, a starchy substance obtained from the pith of sago palms, and forest products.

Many attractions that we can be explored in Obi Islands, such as; Sambiki Island, Laiwui, Anggai gold mine, and more. Obi Islands is a largish, hilly island, is surrounded by a number of smaller inhabited islands. Like the Bacan Islands, the Obis have no native population and are inhabited by Galelarese, Tobelorese and Butonese migrants. Because Obi Islands are hilly, sparsely-inhabited main island certainly has potential for hiking, and there are some good beaches, especially on the smaller off-shore islands. Naturalists may be interested in the one endemic species of pigeon and cuscus, or the poisonous Death Adders for which Obi is famous in the province!

Obi island is one of attractions in South Halmahera, North Maluku province. It is interesting place to visit when you are in Maluku. You can also see a rare bird species, Nuri Ternate or Chattering Lory (Lorius garrulus) in Obi Island.
