One Fine Day at Blitar, The Land from Ancient Kingdom
Blitar regency is settled in southern end of East Java, it has direct border with Kediri in the north, Hindia Ocean in South, Tulungagung in west and Malang in East. Geographically, Blitar is located in the foot of Kelud Mountain, the strato Volcano Mountain that still active until today.
The existence of Kelud Mountain brings a lot of good influence for the fertility of Blitar soil. Local people use this opportunity for the plantation of rice, tobacco and vegetables in their field. In fact, Blitar is also one of the best producers of tobacco in Indonesia and been exist since Dutch colonization in 17 Century. However, the increasing of economic in Blitar is determined by the successful or the failure of tobacco production.
In addition to Kelud Mountain, Brantas River is also has an important role in Blitar. Brantas River is the longest river in East Java after Bengawan Solo and becomes the important river since the ancient kingdoms from the past like Singosari, Majapahit and Kediri Kingdom.
Looking at the historical background, Blitar lies during the important evolution since the kingdom from the past had their glory until today’s modernization becomes. Hence, there are numbers of historical buildings and tourism destinations that worth to be visited in matter of traveling and education.
Penataran TemplePenataran is the largest and the most important Hindu temple complex in East Java. It lies just 10 Kilometers at north of Blitar on the lower slopes of Mt. Kelud. It said that this temple was dedicated to the Siva and used for at least three hundred years, from the 12th to 15th centuries. Most of the buildings, which can be seen today, however, were constructed during Majapahit's golden century.
Sawentar TempleCandi Sawentar is located in Sawentar Village, Kanigoro sub-district, Blitar. This temple is indicating a complex, where there are many of ruins that made from bricks around the main temple. It was build around Majapahit era and it made by Andesit stone that has 9,52 meter long, 6,86 meter wide and 10, 65 meter high.
Jolosutro BeachJolosutro beach is located in Ringenrejo village, Wates district about 45 km from Blitar city. This beach is one of Blitar beaches as part of the South Sea. Jolosutro beach has very beautiful south beach, the waves that splashing in the sea make this beach become more interesting to be visited. Many tourists who want to refresh their mind are commonly visit this natural beach. They can swim, sun bathing, fishing, canoeing or just taking a walk along the beach.
Tambakrejo BeachTambakrejo Beach is located about 30 km from Blitar city, in Tambakrejo village, Wonotirto district, Blitar. In this location, in every first Suro (the new year in Java calendar) is performed "Larung Sesaji" ceremony, and visited by thousands people from elsewhere.
Gebang PalaceGebang Palace is one of historical buildings in Blitar, that related to the first Indonesian President of Soekarno. This is a house that becomes the main home during Soekarno’s childhood and school break. Gebang Palace is located at Jl. Sultan Agung No. 57, 59 and 61, Gerit Bendo village, Sanan Wetan District. After the dead of Soekarno, the house is not open to the public, because it is managed by the heirs or relatives over Bung Karno. However, since the government of Blitar and East Java provincial government took over the house by bought it from Mrs. Soekarmini Wardoyo (Soekarno’s relative) for Rp. 35 Billion, then Gebang Palace is now open for public.
Meru Betiri National Park Meru Betiri is a national park area that covers mangrove, swamp forest and lowland rain forest in Java, which is located in the administrative region of Jember and Banyuwangi.
